Derby Academy

Derby Academy, the oldest coeducational school in the United States, was founded in 1784. The school enrolls 320 students in grades pre-K through 8 and has a student faculty ratio of 6:1. The campus consists of 27 acres (11 ha) of playing fields and academic buildings along the Broad Cove in Hingham, Massachusetts. Students enjoy a variety of extracurricular activities, arts and sports. As of 2007, the Derby Academy endowment was $5.3 million. Derby Academy is located near route 3A in Hingham.

Derby Academy was founded in 1784 by Madame Sarah Derby and is the oldest coeducational institution in the United States. Under Madam Derby young women learned English, French and needlework, while their male counterparts studied mathematics, geography, Greek and Latin. In 1818 the original structure was replaced with what is now called Old Derby Academy, located on Main St. in Hingham, MA. The school moved to its current location on Burditt Ave. in the 1960s.
