Owned and managed by the The Macerich Company, it is the county's only indoor regional shopping center. The fully enclosed mall opened in August 1975 with three anchor stores — Sears, Bamberger's and Wanamaker's — and 150+ specialty stores.[1]

On August 6, 1996 a man attempted to rob an armored truck at the mall. A boy came out of the mall at the same time, and the gunman opened fire, killing the boy. Another woman was shot in a flight of stairs near Sears after a bullet ricochet and it struck her. She died the next day. The gunman was eventually shot and killed by body guard, who was wounded as well.
