Deposit feeder
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Deposit feeders are organisms that feed on the particles of matter in the soil, usually the top sediment where it is filled with organic matter. This can happen by either ingesting the soil or by trapping the falling particles. Deposit feeders can feed on mud or sand without sorting. Because they ingest sediments directly to extract the organic component, these organisms may concentrate toxic contaminants. Examples of organisms that are deposit feeders are: Earthworms, some sedentary Polychaetes such as Amphitrite, Terrebellids and Fiddler crabs. Also Insects that burrow through plant leaves and stems, bore through piles of feces, or mine the caracasses of dead animals or plants are also considered to be deposit feeders.
