The military of the United States is deployed in many countries around the world, with more than 369,000 of its nearly 1.4 million active-duty troops serving outside the United States and its territories. Many are located on installations opened during the Cold War, in which the US government in the aftermath of World War II thought it needed troops around the globe to counter the Soviet Union. Since 2001, the US has deployed troops as part of the War on Terror.
U.S. troops are fighting in several countries, including Afghanistan and Iraq. Others are deployed as part of several peacekeeping missions.
The following are countries, listed by region, in which U.S. troops are deployed. Many of the numbers are based on Department of Defense statistics from June 2005.[1] Omitted are some countries to which fewer than 100 U.S. troops are deployed.
