The Department of Law of the University of Calcutta is situated at the Hazra campus of the university. It was established in January 1909 as the "University College of Law" (see University Law College, Calcutta). In February 1983, it was granted the status as the Department of Law of the university. Being the law department of the university, it has five other law colleges under its aegis other than its own campus for imparting legal education.

The affiliated law colleges are:

  • Surendranath Law College
  • South Calcutta Law College
  • Jogesh Chandra Choudhury Law College
  • Kingston George Law College
  • Bikash Bharati Law College

Examinations are held annually during the month of June or July by the university. All the students of the colleges are under its aegis and the direct students of the department itself has to appear for the examination to get promoted to the next level of their studies.
