The Department for Social Development (DSD) is a devolved Northern Ireland government department in the Northern Ireland Executive. The minister with overall responsibility for the department is the Minister for Social Development.

"The Department comprises two core groupings and two next steps agencies: The Resources, Housing and Social Security Group - Deputy Secretary The Urban Regeneration and Community Development Group - Deputy Secretary The Social Security Agency - Chief Executive Head of the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Division"[1]
The incumbent Minister is Margaret Ritchie (SDLP).[2]

The Department is responsible for two Executive and four non-Executive Non Departmental Public Bodies
- Northern Ireland Housing Executive
- and jointly with the Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister - ILEX Urban Regeneration Company
- The Charities Advisory Committee who manage the Northern Ireland Central Investment fund for Charities
- The Disability Living Allowance Advisory Board for Northern Ireland
- The Rent Assessment Panel
- Vaughan Charity
The Department has oversight of
- Office of the Social Fund Commissioner

Following a referendum on the Belfast Agreement on 23 May 1998 and the granting of Royal Assent to the Northern Ireland Act 1998 on November 19, 1998; a Northern Ireland Assembly and Northern Ireland Executive were established by the Labour government of Prime Minister Tony Blair. The process was known as devolution and was set up to give Northern Ireland devolved legislative powers. DSD is one of 11 devolved Northern Ireland Departments created in December 1999 by the Northern Ireland Act 1998 and The Departments (Northern Ireland) Order 1999.
