A dental bur is a type of drill bit used in a handpiece (commonly called a dental drill). Burs are used in dentistry to shape teeth in preparation for a filling or other type of restoration, including crowns and bridges. The burs are usually made of tungsten carbide or diamond. The three parts to a bur are the head, the neck, and the shank. The head of the bur contains the blades which produce the cutting action.
