Dental cements are Hard brittle materials formed by mixing powder and liqud together.dental cements have a variety of applications.they are used as pulp protecting agents or cavity lining material that is it forms an insulating layer under metallic restoration and it also protects the pulp from injury.it also finds uses as luting agents.luting agents help in sealing or fixing casting, inlays onlays or ay such substance to the tooth structure.the cements used in dentistry are mainly ....zinc oxide eugenol cement, zinc phosphate cement, silicate cement, zinc polycarboxyllate cemnt calcium hydroxide, gic etc.. The cements may b classified on the basis of its components. the cements containing zinc oxide powder are znoe ,znpo4 ,zinc silicophosphate cement. the cements containing leachable glass powder are gic silicate and silicophosphate. cements containing polyacrylic acid in liquid is ressin cement while the cemet conatining phosphoric acid are znpo4.
requirementts of cements are as follows..... they should be non irrritant to pulp and gingiva and they should not suppot the growth of secondary caries. this property is called cariostatic or anticariogenicity.it should form a strong bond with enamel and dentine.it should provide good marginal sealing to prevent marginal leakage.the cement shuold be resistant to dissolution in saliva or any other oral fluid for that matter.the aesthetics of the material should be good and it should hav good thermal andchemical resisatnnce.radio opaque property is also preferrred for diagnostic purposes.
