[edit] Development

Nintendo and TOSE immediately moved on to develop Densetsu no Stafy 2, after the release of its prequel. It took less than a year for Nintendo and TOSE to develop and release it. Like its prequel, Nintendo and TOSE aired animated television commercials for Densetsu no Stafy 2, as well as releasing some promotional merchandise, such as a music album that includes songs sung by Kazuki Saya, all related to the game.

[edit] Storyline

The story takes place a short time after its prequel. The protagonist known as Stafy, was at his home, Tenkai Palace, playing around with his friend, Kyorosuke. Everything was calm and everyone was happy, except for the antagonist, Ogura, who was prisoned inside of the Magic Jar. While inside the Magic Jar, Ogura tried to find out how to escape it, until he made an idea. His idea was to create his children to make them escape out of the Magic Jar and try to free him. Due to it being successful, Ogura's children were smaller and, like their father, they can also create a severe thunderstorm. The storm shook Tenkai Palace, while the Magic Jar fell into the ocean and unleashed Ogura. Seconds later, he captured Stafy's mother and flew away, while Stafy chased after them, until he encountered an edge. He cried and decided to jump off Tenkai Palace. While Kyorosuke tried to stop Stafy, he hanged on to the edge of Tenkai Palace, until the storm shook them off into the ocean. Meanwhile, after the storm faded away, Kyorosuke and Stafy planned to go after Ogura and his children while heading back to Tenkai Palace. Along the way, they encountered some people they knew and some people they didn't know before. Like in the prequel, Stafy helped some people with their problems, like finding their missing items, defeating enemies, and so on, until Stafy and some of his friends fought and brought back Ogura into the Magic Jar to restore peace once again. All bosses (except the last three) are Ogura's children.

[edit] Gameplay

Like its prequel, Densetsu no Stafy 2 plays very much like other platforming games, such as some Super Mario Bros. titles and some Kirby titles, but it's mostly about swimming around stages, which makes this series' official game genre as Marine Platform. In fact, the colorful graphics and level layouts (as well as the look of Stafy) have drawn many comparisons to the Kirby series. Stafy himself can run, jump, and attack via spinning; he also gains access to various transportation objects and animal familiars as the games progress. Unlike its prequel, Densetsu no Stafy 2 usually has certain amounts of stages per area, instead of usually having comprised of multiple stages or worlds, with each stage split up into four sub-stages. Ogura's children as boss characters hide at the end of each world's final stage. Most of the other stages' goals are centered around retrieving a lost or stolen item for another character. There are many items to collect and many enemies to defeat. You can move Stafy on land by running and jumping, but when Stafy is in watery areas, you can move him much more freely, make him push obstacles, and so on. Like its prequel, this game also includes minigames, which some of them are similar to Atari's Breakout series.
