Dennis McCarthy (March 19, 1814February 14, 1886) was a nineteenth century politician and manufacturer from New York.

Born in Salina, New York, the son of Thomas McCarthy (Syracuse politician)[1]. McCarthy pursued in an academic course, attended Valley Academy in Salina and engaged in the manufacturing of salt. In the early 1840's he went into business operating a general store with his brother-in-law Silas Titus[2]. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1846, was mayor of Syracuse, New York in 1853 and was elected a Republican to the United States House of Representatives in 1866, serving from 1867 to 1871, being unsuccessful for reelection in 1870. Afterwards, McCarthy resumed his former business pursuits and served in the New York Senate from 1876 to 1885 where he served as president pro tempore from 1885 to 1886 and as Acting Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1885 to 1886. He died in Syracuse, New York on February 14, 1886 and was interned in Saint Agnes Cemetery in Syracuse[3].
