[edit] Biography
Dennis Mak attended Salesian English School for both his primary and secondary education. He had entered singing contests and swimming competitions during his teen years and worked as a certified lifeguard for 3 years. At the age of 17, after graduating from the fifth year of his secondary education, he entered the EEG Singing Contest 2004 singing "The Person I Love (我愛的人)" by Jordan Chan and became a top 5 finalist for the Hong Kong Team. During the singing contest period, he and the other finalists went to Beijing to film the introductions, led by past winner from 2002, Deep Ng. He was then offered a contract by the Emperor Entertainment Group.
Originally, the company wanted to arrange Dennis to pursue a solo career as a new artist in 2005 and disband the pop duo Boy'Z. But in a turn of events, the company decided to have Dennis continue Boy'Z with Steven Cheung in February 2005 after Kenny Kwan left the duo to pursue a solo career.
During Dennis' career in Boy'Z from 2005 to 2006, he and Steven had to began taking lessons in dancing and gymnastics. They had recorded about 3 unreleased songs, one of the songs is "拜金小姐" which they had performed live on several occasions. They had done 3 advertisements and appeared in a few music videos. Dennis has a cameo role as a delivery man in the 2006 film McDull, The Alumni and a lead role in the 2007 horror film The Haunted School which was filmed in late 2005 and it was his acting debut in a major film. Meanwhile, Dennis was spotted by a management company in Japan who wanted to sign him and Steven as artists, but eventually their manager did not release them.
On June 26, 2006, when William Chan joined Boy'Z, the group was renamed as Sun Boy'z. In late 2006, ORBIS International invited Dennis to advertise for their Christmas gift catalogue.
[edit] Vocal Ability
Dennis has a wide vocal range and a strong, mature voice with a full and rich tone. He displays more vocal technique by belting, singing difficult notes or lines, and he has versatile singing styles. Although Dennis mainly sings the lower harmonies in Sun Boy'z self-titled debut EP, he is capable to sing higher notes and able to use his falsetto, which is heard in their newer songs. His solo vocals are prominent in songs such as "My Lady", "Surfing Boys", Sun Boy'z live performance of "LaLa World", and the song "由夢開始", which is a cover version of "Little Wonders" by Rob Thomas for the 2007 Walt Disney animated film Meet The Robinsons.
