[edit] Early & private life
Denis Walsh was born in Ballynoe, County Cork in 1965. He was educated at the local national school where he first played hurling and football. Walsh later attended Carrig na bhFear boarding school where his sporting talents were developed further. Walsh currently works as a self-employed financial advisor.
[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Throughout his career Walsh played hurling with St. Catherine’s and the divisional side Imokilly, while he played football with Kildorrery and for their divisional side Avondhu. He first tasted success in 1983 when he captured a Junior A hurling title with St. Catherine’s. The following year Walsh captured his first Cork Senior Football Championship medal when Imokilly defeated the great St. Finbarr’s team in the county final. Two years later he collected a second county football medal as Imokilly defeated ‘the Barr’s’ once again. 1994 was another successful year for Walsh at club level. He won a North Cork Junior A football title with Kildorrery, as well as a Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship medal with St. Catherine’s. He added a second intermediate hurling title to his collection in 2004.
[edit] Inter-county
Walsh first came to prominence as Gaelic footballer in the early 1980s. He won a Munster minor medal with Cork in 1983, before later going on to join the under-21 team. Success followed in 1985 when Walsh won a Munster medal at this level, before later collecting an All-Ireland medal. He made it two-in-a-row in 1986 as he captured another pair of provincial and All-Ireland medals at under-21 level.
In 1986 Walsh joined the Cork senior hurling and football teams. He had a baptism of fire for the footballers as he had to mark Eoin Liston of Kerry in an unsuccessful Munster final. In spite of this Walsh collected his firstMunster medal with the hurlers. This was later converted into an All-Ireland medal when Cork, as underdogs, defeated Galway in the final. In 1987 Cork’s footballers were back and Walsh collected his first senior Munster title. Unfortunately, his side were later defeated by Meath in the All-Ireland final. 1988 saw Walsh win a second consecutive Munster football title, however, Meath accounted for Cork in the All-Ireland final once again.
In 1989 Cork continued their provincial dominance with Walsh winning a third Munster football title in-a-row. The county later went on to defeat Mayo in the All-Ireland final, with Walsh collecting a winners medal as a non-playing substitute. 1990 was a very special year for Gaelic games in Cork. Walsh began the year by winning his second Munster hurling title as well as his fourth consecutive Munster football title. He later captured his second All-Ireland hurling medal as cork once again defeated Galway in a thrilling championship decider. Two weeks later Walsh was back in Croke Park as Cork’s footballers defeated Meath to win an historic double of All-Ireland titles. While Walsh was a member of the football panel he was not one of the 21 players to receive a winners’ medal. Two years later in 1992 Walsh won a third Munster hurling medal. Unfortunately, Cork were later beaten in the All-Ireland final by Kilkenny.
[edit] Retirment
In retirement from inter-county service Walsh has remained involved in both hurling and football. He served as manager of the Waterford senior footballers from 2002 until 2003 and he is currently the manager of the St. Catherine’s senior hurling team.
