[edit] Playing career

[edit] Club

Mulcahy played his club hurling with the Midleton club in East Cork. His great hurling career began here in his home town when he won an East Cork minor hurling title in 1972. Midleton joined the senior ranks of the county championship shortly after and Mulcahy claimed a senior county title in 1983. This was later converted into a Munster club title. Mulcahy won back-to-back county medals in 1986 and 1987, before adding a second Munster club title to his collection. At the beginning of 1988 he won a coveted All-Ireland club medal following a victory over Athenry in the final. Mulcahy won a fourth and fnal county title in 1992.

[edit] Inter-county

Mulcahy never played minor or under-21 hurling at inter-county level, however, he joined the senior panel in the late 1970s. He came on as a sub to win a National Hurling League medal in 1981, however, it would be another few seasons before he found a regular place on Cork’s championship fifteen. By 1984 Mulcahy was installed at corner-back and he duly won his first Munster medal. He later won his first All-Ireland medal following Cork’s defeat of Offaly in the centenary year of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Mulcahy won a second Munster title in 1985, however, Cork were later defeated by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. A third Munster medal was added to his collection in 1986 and Mulcahy once again lined out with Cork in the All-Ireland final. Even though ‘the Rebels’ were underdogs Mulcahy won a second All-Ireland medal that day as Cork defeated Galway. His performance in the championship that year earned him his sole All-Star award. Cork lost back-to-back Munster finals to Tipperary in 1987 and 1988 and it looked as if Mulcahy’s inter-county career was over. He played no part in Cork’s Munster and All-Ireland victories in 1990, however, Mulcahy returned in 1992 to win a fourth Munster medal in 1992. He later played in his third All-Ireland final, however, Kilkenny were victorious on that occasion. Mulcahy subsequently retired from inter-county hurling.

Mulcahy also won a Railway Cup medal with Munster in 1985.
