[edit] Early life
Denis Grimes was born in Kilfinane, County Limerick on 7 August 1864. He was educated locally and, in a time when opportunities were few, he later worked as a labourer.
[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Grimes played his club hurling with his local Kilfinane team. In 1897 he won a county championship title with the club.
[edit] Inter-county
The win for Kilfinane in 1897 allowed the club to go on and represent Limerick in the Munster Championship. Grimes was appointed captain and he subsequently claimed his first, and only, Munster title. In the subsequent All-Ireland final Limerick defeated Kilkenny on a score line of 3-4 to 2-4. It was Limerick’s first All-Ireland title.
[edit] Retirement
After Grimes’s All-Ireland success in 1897 he emigrated to Wales and worked in the mines. He died in 1920.
