What a nonsense, 96% of all Austrians don't identify themselfs as Germans!!!! I know that because I´m Austrian!!!!

- The name of an ethnic group of "Austrians" is politically incorrect and violates the Austrian Law. The right term is Native German-Speakers. Since the Kärntner Slovenes are politically Austrians, the "existence" of an Austrian Ethnicity (which does scientifically not exist) would discriminate them as well as Burgenland Croats und Czech- and Slovak minorities. The term of Austrians is therefore not well chosen in respect of the Austrian Constitution. I have therefore corrected the ethnic groups in, today mostly used, "speakers". As for the people who may defend the position of the CIA World Factbook. The same Factbook considers the US ethnic groups in black, white etc and the German Speakers in Switzerland as German. The US Dep. of State considers the same Austrians as meant in the Factbook as Germans. Therefore the Correctness must be deeply questioned. The history of the World Factbook can be actually seen in the last years publications, in which ethnic groups in several european states changed over night. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIA_World_Factbook -- 213.47.143.53 04:27, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

I fully agree. A question out of personal interest: you write that an ethnic group Austrians violates Austrian law ... which law exactly? Nahabedere 08:28, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

It's me again, from a different PC. It does not really "violate" a law. Sorry to put it this way. Actually there is no mentioning of an austrian ethnic group in the austrian policy, since the other ethnic groups of Slovenes, Croats etc are also Austrians. Naming german-speaking austrian citizens then as austrian ethnics is kind of "not lawful" and seems racist. I am in Austria und we do not speak of an austrian ethnicity here, but of german-speakers as well as all the others (all together: austrian citizens). I will also look up an AUSTRIAN demographic report instead of this CIA Factbook report.
Wieder ich! Mit deiner Hilfe, Nahabedere, würd ich gerne einen deutschen Artikel über die Demographie Österreichs machen (ich bin noch neu) anhand von hiesigen Statistiken und Datenbanken. Was hälst du davon? Sowas in der kompletten Form (seminartauglich) gibt es das ja noch nicht. -- 213.47.143.53 15:38, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
could you create a personal account? then we can discuss (in German) on your personal discussion page (it's not polite to write something not in English on a public dicussion page) Nahabedere 09:21, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Maybe I have missed it in the essay and it is out of the context but I have a question which is interesting to me. Do Austrians consider themselves as Germans and if they do, why isnt Austria a part of German nation state? I would be happy if you can post an asnwer. bye!

In the past Austrians considered themselves as Germans, that's right... But you have to see, that no "German nation" exist in the head of the most "Germans"... It's a summary of volkgroups witch have quite the same language. "Highgerman" or socalled "Standardgerman" is a dialect witch is spoken in the north of Germany. All other regions have there own, socalled "german languages" for example:

  • Austro-Bavarian
  • Allemannic
  • Franconian
  • Nethergerman (Dutch)
  • Porussian (Highgerman)

when someone speaks his own language probably a citizen of other language can't understand them! German languages are very different... For example a Austrian has big problems to understand a "German" from Switzerland when they speak dialekt. We Austrians identify ourselfs as "ethnic Bavarians" or "ethnic Alemannics", in the sence of the language "German Austrians" There are following ethnicities witch are socalled - in the sence of the language - "Germans"

  • Bavarians
  • Alemannics
  • Franconians
  • Porussians
  • Plattdeutsche (Nethergermans)

all those groups are different in there culture and mentality

Austria is not a part of Germany today because of it's own history, own culture, and own mentality. And 95% of all Austrians don't want to give up there independence. See also 3. Reich! Even no one in Germany want to bild a greater Germany with Austria!

  • The fact is - People from Germany, Austria and Switzerland are "Germans" in the sence of the "Highgerman Language" wich is spoken offical in all three countries.
  • We are not "Germans" (in Austria) in the sence of our ethnicity or culture - we are Bavarians, Alemannics, Slovenes, Croatians, Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks and Roma or Sinti

most of the above is quite dubios. Austrians are Austrians (and not Germans) because they consider themselves to be Austrians (and not Germans). Discussion finished. This has nothing to do with language. Moreover, I (as an Austrian) do not consider myself to be "ethnic Bavarian" or "ethnic Alemmanics", and I guess this is similar for most other Austrians.
