Demon (Artemis Fowl)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Demons, in the Artemis Fowl Series, are the Eighth Family of Fairies. During the battle of Tailtte ten thousand years ago, they fought with the other fairy families against humans, but realized that they could never win. As a result, the warlock demons used magic to try to move Hybras, their island, but ended up sending it into an unstable Limbo because Leon Abott and Bludwin broke the warlock circle . Demons are unlike the other fairy families in that they evolved from microorganisms from a chunk of the moon that fell down to Earth.

Young demons are called imps, and once they are old enough and experience a large bloodlust, they "warp", surrounded by a cocoon of slime, emerging 24 hours later into full demons. The warlock demons do not warp, for a warped demon loses any traces of magic it might've had. Once an imp warps, it chooses a name from a human book called Lady Heatherington Smythe's Hedgerow brought back from Earth by Abbot.

Demons are happiest when they are at war. The warlocks were supposedly blasted into space when they failed to completely send Hybras into Limbo, thus causing the deterioration of the time-spell. It turns out one of them, Qwan, survived, by using magic to petrify his body and have it revived with N°1's help 10,000 years later in Taiwan.

Demons, at the constant urging of Abbot, who is something like a hero to them, developed a hate for humans and are expected to kill them when given the chance. Sometimes, demons who get too close to the island's volcano are whisked across dimensions and time when they are not anchored with silver, as the time-spell that keeps Hybras in Limbo is slowly deteriorating. Most of them wind up dead. Demon lore holds that the ancient longing for the moon sends them to embark on such dangerous journeys.
