Demographics of Yemen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yemenis are divided into two principal Islamic religious groups: the Zaidi sect of the Shi'a, found in the north and northwest, and the Shafa'i school of Sunni Islam, found in the south and southeast. Yemenis are predominantly of Arab origin, although African admixture is present among inhabitants, especially in the Yemen Hadramawt, where the population's DNA is about 35% Sub-Saharan, the highest level in the Near East. However, this is only on the female line, and Sub-Saharan admixture on the male line is virtually nill in the Arab world.[1] Arabic is the official language, although English is increasingly understood in major cities. In the Mahra area in the extreme east, several non-Arabic languages are spoken. When the former states of north and south Yemen were established, most resident minority groups departed.
