Democratic Republicans (Italy)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Democratic Republicans (Repubblicani Democratici, RD) was a tiny liberal Italian political party.

It was founded in 2004 by splinters from the Italian Republican Party (PRI), who wanted to get rid of the alliance with the centre-right House of Freedoms parties. Its leader is Giuseppe Ossorio. In 2005 regional election, the party presented its list only in Campania, where it scored 1.4%, re-electing Giuseppe Ossorio to the Regional Council.

RD is sided with The Union and contested the 2006 general election within the list of Antonio Di Pietro's Italy of Values (IdV). Consequently to this pact of federation, Giuseppe Ossorio was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in his home region Campania and sits in the Italy of Values caucus.

On 20 September 2007, Giuseppe Ossorio announced that the Democratic Republicans were to join the Democratic Party alongside with fellow ex-PRI members of the European Republicans Movement and, thus, leaving IdV. Ossorio remarked his political and human friendship with Di Pietro and expressed his hope to meet again with him him one time in the PD, from which for now IdV is excluded.[1]

It became part of the Democratic Party at its founding congress on 14 October 2007.
