Demi-culverin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Demi-culverin was a medium cannon similar to, but slighty larger than a saker and smaller than a regular culverin developed in the early 17th century.[1] Barrels of demi-culverins were typically about 11ft (3.4m) long, had a calibre of 4 inches (10cm) and could weigh up to 3400lb (1550kg). It required 6lb (2.75kg) of black powder to fire an 8lb (3.6kg) round shot. The demi-culverin had an effective range of 1800ft (550m).[1][2]

Demi-culverins were valued by generals for the range, accuracy and effectiveness. They were often used in sieges for wall and building demolition.[1]
