Demeter Fragrance Library

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DemeterFL, Inc. is a Great Neck, NY company that sells fragrances based on familiar, "everyday" scents, such as dirt, tomatoes, and chocolate chip cookies. The fragrances, according to founder Christopher Brosius, are intended to be an evocative, "idealized" representation of these scents, which Demeter calls "single experience fragrances" [1]. This is in contrast to most traditional perfumes, which combine a larger range of ingredients with the intent of creating a unique effect.

The unique perspective Demeter brings to fragrance was extended in the spring of 2007 with the introduction of the Jelly Belly Collection; a group of scents inspired by Jelly Belly jelly bean recipes. The scents include Hot Fudge Sundae, Blueberry Muffin, Sugar & Spice and Fruit Salad.

In the spring of 2007 Demeter added Crayon ("smells like that fresh box of crayons on the first day or school"), Pure Soap ("The smell of freshly scrubbed skin") and Egg Nog.

Demeter fragrances tend to last for a fairly short time, compared to traditional perfumes, when sprayed on the skin. The label on the bottles describes each as "pick-me-up cologne spray", rather than more usual perfumery categories such as eau de toilette or eau de parfum.

Besides its cologne sprays, Demeter Fragrance Library makes other products scented with the same fragrances, such as body lotions, shower gels, exfoliant scrubs and room sprays.

Actor Clint Eastwood and supermodel Kate Moss have both claimed to wear Demeter's Dirt, while actress Drew Barrymore wears Gin and Tonic [2].
