[edit] Images

On the left side of your screen, you'll see a box labelled "toolbox". In there is a link to the "Upload File" function. Here you can upload gifs, pngs, jpgs, and oggs (I believe that's all the types of files). I think there is an image request page, but I can't seem to find it. Keep in mind that all copyrighted images need a fair use rationale, and appropriate lisencing tag. Don't hesitate to ask more questions if you need more help. --WillMak050389 21:15, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DC Meetup notice

Greetings. There is going to be a Washington DC Wikipedia meetup on next Saturday, July 21st at 5pm in DC. Since you are listed in Category:Wikipedians_in_Maryland, I thought I'd invite you to come. I'm sorry about the short notice for the meeting. Hopefully we'll do somewhat better in that regard next time. If you can't come but want to make sure that you are informed of future meetings be sure to list yourself under "but let me know about future events", and if you don't want to get any future direct notices \(like this one\), you can list yourself under "I'm not interested in attending any others either" on the DC meetup page.--Gmaxwell 00:26, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Refs

Hi there, thanks for your input in the AFD too. I'm not that experienced in AFD, just starting to participate in a few but it's refreshing to see people actually discussing the issues they have and not just saying "Keep per nom" or "delete per nom". And although I'm not a deletionist and hate the fact that so much potentially salvageable stuff gets deleted, at least something good can come out of these discussions, ie. the article being improved.

As far as citations... I'm not really sure how to help. I can't remember how I learned to use them exactly, just by using them I guess! I usually just pick one from WP:CITET, generally the web one, the book one, or the general citation one, copy & paste it & fill in the gaps. It looks like there are some useful tools at the bottom of WP:CITE although I havent used any of them, so I can't really say. The ones on Brian D. Weiss look ok. I tend to use the more vertical versions (like the ones on WP:CITET) just because I find it easier to work with, but that's just taste I guess. Some people dont like to use the templates at all possibly because it makes the text quite hard to edit when there are loads of refs on a page, and it's not policy to use them, but I think there a definite advantage. Anyway, I'm rambling now, and I'm not sure that I'm really helping you, but my advice would be just keep using them & you'll get used to them. --BelovedFreak 21:29, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

PS I changed one of the refs on the Brian D. Weiss page to how I would do it. I added the authors and the other main thing is that "title" should refer to title of the article rather than name of the publication. --BelovedFreak 21:35, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
Haha, good... I was worried I was stating the obvious! Glad I could help... --BelovedFreak 21:40, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AfD / Jack Franklin

Comment I'm a big fan of IAR, usually, but in this instance, I think having him included adds to the encyclopedia. Being able to say, "We have -everyone- who ever played in the bigs," I think, is better than being able to say, "We have most people we consider notable that have ever played in the bigs." It makes this a more complete reference. (Just my opinion.) Deltopia 15:27, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

My comment wasn't directed at the AfD in general. I actually agree that any person who's ever played in the big leagues be allowed an article if someone is willing to write it and upkeep it. My comment was directed at TJ Spyke, who said:
Regretful Keep I strongly disagree with that part of WP:N, and do not think that just appearing in a MLB games makes them notable. Until that changes though, that makes this guy "notable". I would support changing that notability requirement though. TJ Spyke 04:27, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
This is an example of the kind of regulation creep that's been happening on Wikipedia that just makes me cringe. The thought that you have to vote to keep something in order to comply with a guideline that you disagree with is fundamentally flawed. I was trying to encourage TJ Spyke to vote common sense rather than by the book. But thank you for replying.

[edit] SIS

I'm a little puzzled--first you offer advice to the author, then you turn around and afd it without notifying him? Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/School of information studies. Agreed, he didnt follow your advice--and it was basically good advice, except probably you should have been very much stronger about the need for references and the absolute need for avoiding copyvio. Anyway, i notified him & will work with the article. DGG (talk) 11:12, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

In cases like this it doesnt take a complete rewrite, though I will. All it takes is to stubbify, leaving enough to show the notability. I do that when i come across outrageous spam from notable companies--I sometimes do it even when i come across clear copyvio for really notable organizations. It keeps the article , so its there when people look at WP, and generally someone expands it eventually. Obviously, if the subject is borderline i don't bother. Incidentally, we have a problem with PR guys in universities. Unlike the corporate world, they dont get paid by results. Durova wrote WP:BFAQ as a guide to both corporate and noncorporate spammers, and did a wonderful job. It's a good thing to tell people about when relevant. If you come across any more university people like this, let me know--I know how to find them, and their bosses, and I can convince them about half the time. I did OK for Columbia Environmental studies , and are working on NYU public admin. She & I working together failed with Wisconsin school of Ed., and their stuff got deleted. [edit] Patrick O. Brown speedy deletion

As the article states he is a member of the US National Academy of Science, i.e. considered to one of the 2000 most distinguished living scientists. I think that should justify inclusion in it self, even though the article is in a miserable condition at the moment. I think we used to have a specific notability guideline for academics, though it doesn't seem to be there know. I guess you can considered this as a "weak oppose" vote. [edit] Ref Desk

Haha, thanks for the comment. However, unfortunately, I am not writing a novel :( The questions that I ask are simply out of mere personal curiosity that I was unable to satisfy before I discovered the wonderful Reference Desk. The great part about it is that there are a lot of mixed opinions and ideas on the Ref Desk and therefore, the answers provided are quite diverse and offer a broader insight into the question.
