New car registrations in 2005 were the fifth highest on record, down 5.0 percent on 2004's figures despite a jump of 8.7 percent in December. The rise for the last month of the year was due entirely to a 25 percent increase in car purchases by businesses, brought on because December was the last month of tax exemptions for Euro 4 diesel company car drivers. Diesel-engined cars represented a record 36.8 percent of new car sales as a whole, with almost 900,000 purchased. By contrast, a weaker economy and increasing concern at growing motoring costs saw new car purchases by private buyers down by over ten percent.[1]

The Ford Focus was the biggest selling car every month in 2005, its seventh consecutive year as the country's bestseller.[1]

New car registrations in 2006 were the sixth highest on record, falling 3.9 percent on 2005's figures. The Ford Focus retained its position as the country's bestselling car for the eighth consecutive year, with cumulative sales since its introduction in 1999 now exceeding one million. Diesel-engined vehicles accounted for almost 900,000 sales and a 38.3 percent share of the total market, both record levels.[2]

New car registrations in 2007 were the sixth highest on record, rising 2.5 percent over 2006's figures and surpassing predictions made at the start of the year by 90,000 units, despite the effect of the credit crunch on private buyers.[3]

The Ford Focus was the bestselling car for the ninth consecutive year. Ford were also the bestselling manufacturer overall. Diesel-powered cars, with over 900,000 sales for the first time, claimed an unprecedented 40 percent market share, a figure expected to improve further in 2008 as fuel economy and lower emissions, two strengths of diesel engines, continue to be prioritized by buyers.[3]
