Deltora Quest is the original series created by the author Emily Rodda in the year 2000 in Australia. There are 8 books in this series which include The Forests of Silence, Lake of Tears, City of the Rats, The Shifting Sands, Dread Mountain, Maze of the Beast, Valley of the Lost and Return to Del in that order. These books follow with other works of Emily Rodda including Deltora Quest 2, Deltora Quest 3, The Deltora Book of Monsters and Tales of Deltora.

The story follows the adventures of Lief, a young boy who is the son of a blacksmith, Jarred. He lives in the city of Del, which is located in the mythical island of Deltora created for the series. Lief is in a time of a sort of depression after been under the power of the evil Shadow Lord since just before he was born. . The only way for the land to overthrow the Shadow Lord is for Lief to retrieve lost gems of a fabled belt, once worn by the kings for Deltora's protection. The Shadow Lord had overthrown the kingdom by manipulating King Endon (a previous Deltoran king) to not wear the belt. After thousands of years, the gems were scattered throughout Deltora by the Shadow Lord's 7 Ak-baba. They were delivered to fearful places and were guarded by seven terrifying guardians. Lief is accompanied by Barda "The Bear" who was a palace guard in the time of King Endon (the last king)and. Together they travel to these places to find the lost gems.
The places they travel to retrieve the gems form the titles of each book except the last. The are 7 gems they must collect are the topaz, the ruby, the opal, the lapis-lazuli, the emerald, the amethyst and the diamond, which represent each of the old tribes of Deltora. Each has its spot in a specially made belt by the famous blacksmith Adin who saved the land from the Shadow Lord the first time, thousands of years ago. Now that the gems removed and the belt lies empty and powerless, Lief and Barda set out to make the belt whole and restore the former power of the kings. To start the journey they set out to the Forests of Silence, to obtain the Topaz, the gem of faith, and add its power to the belt. On their travels they come across Jasmine in the forests and she joins them on their quest. She is always accompanied by Kree a raven and Filli a squirrel-like creature. They are Jasmine's only friends in the forest and are like family to her.

The Forests of Silence is the first book of the Deltora Quest series and acts as a sort of introduction to the series. The book is split in two, the first following the lives of Jarred and King Endon, of their childhood and adult life up to when the Shadow Lord conquers the land of Deltora and the gems are separated from the belt. Jarred and Endon were the best of friends until the chief adviser, Pradaline, frames Jarred for a crime he didn't do and forces him to flee the palace. Jarred learns that everything they thought they knew about the world outside the palace was a lie. The palace was surrounded by a magical mist, caused the people of the palace to believe that the village of Del was a happy and prosperous place. In actual fact, the people in Del were starving and in great decline. Jarred begins his new life as a blacksmith's apprentice, later becoming a blacksmith himself. Jarred watched the palace every night for the next few years, until Endon signaled him and by then it was too late to save the gems and prevent the Shadow Lord's invasion.
