Deltek, Inc. (NASDAQ: PROJ) is a software company that specializes in programs to be used by government contractors and similar businesses.

The company dates back to 1983 but was not publicly traded until November 2007.

Deltek's niche in the software industry is its focus on developing software for use by companies having a significant need for project accounting, such as government contractors (who must, under U.S. government procurement law, track costs by individual contract, and in some cases by task order or line item). Deltek later expanded its line to market to Architect/Engineer and consulting firms (who also must be able to account for costs by project).

The company's main program is Deltek Costpoint. Costpoint is an ERP software package which, unlike competitors SAP and Oracle, has been specifically designed for use by larger government contractors, who must follow the U.S. Government's cost reporting rules under the Federal Acquisition Regulation and Cost Accounting Standards.

In addition to Costpoint, Deltek also markets other accounting system packages: GCS Premier (for use by smaller and mid-size government contractors; GCS standing for Government Contractor Software) Vision (for use by mid-size and large Architect/Engineer firms), and Vision Small Business (for use by smaller consulting and A/E firms).

Deltek also offers specialized products such as GovWin (designed to assist companies through the stringent rules of government procurement regulations, in order to help them win government contracts), Cobra (specifically designed for government contractors with large contracts that must track project profitability under the U.S. government's Earned Value Management System, or EVMS), and Time and Expense with Employee Self Service (designed to capture billable hours and expenses on projects).
