[edit] Biography
Arlin Godwin was born in Pensacola, Florida in the United States - and a long way from his British ancestry. Several experts have traced his family's roots back to a 15th century king of England and somewhat more recently to the famous family of William Godwin whose most prominent member might have been Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein .
[edit] Early career
Various Biographies that have been posted by the act itself and which have appeared over the years on official Delphinium Blue web sites have explained how, in 1994, a friend at Polygram Records took an interest in Arlin's musical inclinations and advised him to use a group name rather than present himself as a solo artist. After compiling a list of potential "band" names the record company chose Darkangeles (one word pronounced like Los Angeles).
Arlin Godwin has given interviews over the years describing how he decided to press his own vinyl 7 inch single - an early version of "Stereo Porno Groove" - and release it under the Darkangeles name. He had 100 copies made and then mailed them out to college radio stations nationwide. "Stereo Porno Groove" received air play at 72 stations and charted on a number of college radio playlists. The B-Side "Ed's Place" became an even bigger success, with DJs repeatedly asking for new copies because they had worn out the originals. "Stereo Porno Groove" also earned Arlin his first Washington (DC) Area Music Association WAMMIE Award [1] nomination in the Techno category. Arlin went on to release more singles and garner 22 WAMMIE nominations and 2 wins as of 2003.
[edit] The Secret Life of Boys
According to the official Delphinium Blue artist web site Arlin Godwin moved into a new apartment near the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. in 2001. There he set up a state of the art digital studio and went to work on his first full length album. According to the DB web site Arlin had previously written individual tracks one at a time, so working on a full album of songs intended to be listened to as one complete project was a new adventure. "The Secret Life of Boys" took a year to write and produce. Arlin spent months working on some of the tracks.
This album led to Delphinium Blue signing with upstart San Francisco label INgrooves which is now home to Theivery Corporation, Crystal Method and Dolly Parton, to name a few. The project was released July 23, 2003, and has, according to Apple iTunes charts, consistently remained Delphinium Blue's top seller. The album featured 12 tracks including the homoerotic single "Boy Seventeen". The song was later to be performed live before 225,000 people at Washington, D.C.'s Capital Pride Festival in June 2004. This was Delphinium Blue's second live show ever. The first happened on April 3, 2003, at the legendary Washington, D.C., nightclub Nation which was closed in 2006 to make way for a new baseball stadium.
[edit] Rush Push
Even before "The Secret Life of Boys" came out in the summer of 2003 Arlin Godwin was deep into production on his next project "Rush Push". There had been enough of a break in between completion of the first album and its subsequent release by INgrooves that Arlin had plenty of time to work on new material. The results became the second Delphinium Blue album in only one year. Released on October 14, 2003 the album featured 13 tracks including the single "Little Sister" which unexpectedly received considerable radio play in Great Britain. The song "Joy" was later picked up for airplay at SIRIUS Radio and reached #13 on the OutQ Top 20 chart.
[edit] Budhatronic
Released February 26, 2005 "Budhatronic" is a 5 track EP containing somewhat experimental material. The title track was a left over song from the "Rush Push" sessions and Arlin worked on it repeatedly for several years. Finally he felt it had to be released. It is an epic electronic rock piece which begins with a lengthy ambient intro and explodes into a massive jam. The record also contains the R&B experiment "Watching As You Go By" which Arlin performed live at Washington DC's Capital Pride Festival in 2005 before an estimated 80,000 people.
[edit] Stereo Porno Groove
In 2006 Arlin revisited his old "Stereo Porno Groove" single and ended up releasing a remix of the song plus 13 additional tracks including "California". The album was released August 1, 2006 and was immediately embraced by fans who had been waiting for quite some time for the next project. Numerous tracks from the album have aired around the world on various radio stations as well as on countless podcasts. Even before the album was complete leaked copies of some of the most exciting songs were aired by both radio and podcast producers including perhaps the most famous of them all Adam Curry who played "California" on his Daily Source Code show.
