Delle Piane Family History
The Delle Pianes are a very ancient and noble family with a naval history with the Moors during the medieval period. The family is registered in Genova’s Albergo of nobles and in (Il Libro d’Oro of nobility) since the 16th century, Liguria, Italy. The family also had an important antique palace in Novi Ligure and a castle in the Ligurian coast near Nervi, Genova. The family’s Genovese genealogy begins towards the end of the 12th century making it one of the oldest registered families in Northern Italy. The other ancient branches of this family have settled in other areas by the Mediterranean, they have older genealogies from or before the 10th century and different versions of coat of arms. The family also settled in Argentina, Corsica and in Spain, according to ancestral facts and Latin origins. The naval symbol of the Delle Pianes is a woman with sails, this is depicted in the family’s crowned coat of arms with eight pearls. The style and title of the ennobled Delle Piane di Novi family is Nobile.
This surname of delle Piane was a locational name 'the dweller at the plains' from a residence nearby. The local surname, derived from a place name where the man held land or from the place from which he had come, or where he actually lived. This original surname is preceded by a nobiliary preposition such as "delle", "atte", "by" or "in". The name may derive from a manor held, from working in a religious dwelling or from literally living by a wood or marsh or by a stream. A related spelling of the name was brought into England in the wake of the Norman Invasion of 1066 in the French form PLAN, another related Ligurian spelling is Dellepiane. Delle Piane was originally rendered in ancient Latin form as PLANUM (meaning flat, level). The norm is that people had this type of surnames until the tenth century, most of the other typical European surnames were formed from the thirteenth century onwards.
The splendour of the Delle Piane family
The Delle Pianes are on of Italy’s established families. One of the members of this family is the royal portraitist Giovanni Maria delle Piane, he resided with King Philip V of Spain and Queen Elizabeth Farnese and their family and relatives for over 30 years in the 17th century. This artistic relationship created a large collection of personal and elegant portraits of the heads of the royal Italian families, some of the main portraits are treasured in Caserta Palace and in the Spanish Royal Palace of Madrid, Spain. Many members of the Delle Piane family support the royal Savoy orders and delegations. A notable nobleman is the ancestral historian Gian Marino delle Piane, he is a member of various delegations and orders including Iagi: Instituto Araldico Genealogico Italiano. General Luis delle Piane is the father of Argentine history, a military member from this Italian family. The Delle Pianes were registered in the main Albergo of military charges together with the Doria family and the Imperiale family, Albergo was a royal and aristocratic organisation for the republic of Genova.
