[edit] Route description
Delaware Route 5 heads northwest on Oak Orchard Road from the intersection with River Road on the shore of the Indian River Bay, passing through the residential areas of Oak Orchard. It intersects Delaware Route 24 and makes a right turn, forming a concurrency. The route heads north into the Long Neck area, where it intersects Delaware Route 23.
Delaware Route 5 then turns left onto DE 23, which is called Indian Mission Road. In Fairmount, DE 23 branches off to the northeast, and DE 5 continues to the northwest on Indian Mission Road. At the intersection with Hollyville Road in Hollyville, the name changes to Harbeson Road. The route continues northwest to Harbeson, where it intersects U.S. Route 9 and Delaware Route 404.
It then heads toward the historic shipbuilding town of Milton. Just south of Milton, DE 5 meets the southern terminus of the Delaware Route 5 Alternate bypass to the west of Milton, which heads west on Sand Hill Road. Also at this intersection, the name changes from Harbeson Road to Federal Street. Federal Street continues north into the town to the intersection with Front Street, where DE 5 turns left onto Union Street. It then crosses the Broadkill River and heads north through the northern part of Milton. At the north end of town it intersects Delaware Route 16 and also the northern terminus of DE 5 Alt., which heads west on DE 16. DE 5 continues north on Union Street Extended to its northern terminus at Delaware Route 1.
