The route was created in 1999 when Delaware Route 404 was rerouted to bypass Bridgeville on the alignment of short lived Delaware Route 404 Alternate. The easternmost part of the route in the southern part of Bridgeville is cosigned with U.S. Route 13 Business, which itself is a business route off of U.S. Route 13.
