DeLand High School is a public high school in DeLand, Florida with enrollment of 3,616 students, a student/teacher ratio of 16.5, and a graduation rate above 90%.[1]

[edit] Controversy
In May 2002, 12 students super-glued stolen beehives within the school and also glued a large number of classroom and building doors shut. The school prank resulted in the release of a swarm of 80,000 bees. The students were suspended and later sentenced to perform community service. This prank was also the first to air on MTV's show "High School Stories: Scandals, Pranks & Controversies" receiving an hour long special.[2][3]

DeLand High School has been an International Baccalaureate high school since the 1970's. The program is a rigorous academic program that prepares its students for college with an extreme critical workload that promotes deep thinking and the development of a world viewpoint.

DeLand High School hosts an Engineering Program where students take specific classes to train them in the engineering field.

DeLand High School is building a brand new facility for the Construction Academy that has opened for the 2007 school year. Students will be able to learn the concepts of construction so they can go into the work field.

[edit] Weightlifting
In 2005 the Bulldogs won a state championship in weightlifting for the 11th time. In 2008 the Bulldogs also won both girls' and boys' weightlifting, with a state record in girl's weightlifting. The Bulldogs' Brandon Partin a senor in 2008 won back to back state titles in Florida. In 2007 he won the 183 pound division and in 2008 he came in first for the 199 pound division. Partin was also featured in Sports Illustrated for his accomplishments.

In 1951 the Bulldogs baseball team attended the state championship. The Bulldogs became state champions in 1961. In 2006 and 2007 the team made it into the state's final four championship. In 2007 they were state runner-up and beat two-time state champion Flanagan/Pembroke Pines. The baseball team is also home to Michael Main, who was once featured in Sports Illustrated and drafted by the Texas Rangers in the first round of the 2007 MLB draft.[4]

The girls bowling team won the State Championship in 2005 and have been defeated since.

The girl's golf team had an 0-30 regular season (including no postseason wins) in 2007. Their last defeat came at the disctrict tournament from Lake Mary High School by 70 strokes. Senior Courtney Finocchiaro led the team with a low nine hole score of 75 at Grand Haven and a low eighteen hole score of 179. Freshman Karen Hutton was right behind with an 180 at districts.
Playing a much stronger schedule, the boys team finished respectably but failed to qualify as a team for districts. Sophomore Billy Anderson fired a 74 at conference for the best eighteen hole score, qualified for districts and then lost in a sudden-death playoff to miss regionals by a single stroke. The boys team's scores were consistently about 25 strokes better than the girls in nine hole tournaments. They also play from the man tees, playing nearly 1000 yards longer than the girls' tees at Southridge Golf Course.
[edit] Varsity Basketball
The varisty basketball team has a good track record and in the 2006-2007 school year they beat many intimidating opponents such as Deltona, Mainland, Lake Mary, West Orange,and University and they also won a mid Florida title in 2006 Ray graham a senior in the season of 2008 was given a scholarship to ERAU. The Bulldogs went to the playoffs for the class 6-A in Florida for 2008.

In 2007, the academic team truimphed over Spruce Creek's honored academic team and became district champions. They regularly compete in regional competitions.

DeLand's band, The Marching Bulldogs, has gained recognition over the last 5 years visiting the Georgia Peach Bowl and the Florida Bandmasters Association State Concert Festival three times, twice which they received the highest possible ratings. In the 2007-08 school year, the band returned to the State Concert Festival, receiving superior ratings from all judges. The band's director is Ted Shistle and is now under the leadership of Band Captain John MacDonald, 1st Lieutenant Sarah Hall, 2nd Lieutenant Jeni Paz-Rodriguez, Drum Majors Anthony Mandese, and Jeffrey Stricklin.

Deland high school is one of two schools in Volusia County that offers Mu Alpha Theta math honors society. Members regularly participate in the regional competitions.

- Terence Trent D'Arby, singer/songwriter, now known as Sananda Maitreya. (Class of 1979)
- Nancy Benoit, Wife of Chris Benoit now deceased (Class of circa 1982)
- Bridget Gordon, member of the 1988 US Olympic gold medal Women's basketball team. (class of 1985)[5]
- Sara McLarty, professional triathlete, 15-time NCAA American swimming at the University of Florida (class of 2000)[6]
- Lisa Davies, former fashion plate, she now models for campaigns such as Emporio Armani.[7]
- Shane Simpson (military), awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal for Act of Courage, saving his own life and that of an Air Force employee. (Class of 2006)[8][citation needed]
- Marc "Tank" Dixon, Class of 2004. On air personality & Program Director of WRWS-FM 99.1 Radio station in Daytona Beach, Florida by the name of DJ Nailz
- William "Tra" Thomas, proffessional football player. Thomas plays left tackle for the Philladelphia Eagles footbal team. He went to college at Florida State University. He has had a lengthy career in the NFL and still proves to be one of the better tackles today. He was injured most of the 2008 season.
- John Heney, a member of John Phillip Sousa's band; he played the xylophone. He brought his experience to the students in Deland High's band which won numerous awards throughout Florida.
