"Degausser" is a song from Brand New's 2006 album The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. It is track 4 on the album.
[edit] Background Information
A degausser is a magnetic device used to completely wipe or erase a roll of film and/or audio tape. Degaussers are often used in film-making. Another common example is the large electromagnet used to disable security tags on many electronics and/or CDs.
[edit] Live performance
"Degausser" was played extensively during Brand New's 2006 tour, including their support with Dashboard Confessional, under the title, "Take Apart Your Head". The first single off the album was originally going to be this song, but was later changed in favor of "Sowing Season".
In an interview with the band's street team, Lacey stated that "Degausser" was his favorite track to play live from the new album, The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me.
During a performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Lacey mentioned that the song was written about a "demon that lives up in the attic in my cousin's house". At a performance at the House of Blues in Chicago (and in other performances) he stated that it is a song about the beginning of the end of the world. Lacey introduced the song in Montreal (May 20, 2007 at Club Soda) saying "This song is about De Loreans". He coincidentally performed the song as well as others in the set with a black Fender Jazzmaster bearing a De Lorean emblem. Since in-depth interviews with Lacey are seldom, the true meaning of the song is yet to be identified.
On April 24, 2007 during a radio promotion/interview before their concert, Lacey credited the inspiration and a few lyrics from this song to musician Roky Erickson.
On November 2, 2007 Jesse introduced the song by saying "This is a Daniel Johnston song."
The band played this song twice in one set at The Bamboozle in 2007. When asked why, Lacey stated, "Because we wanted to."
