Degana

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Degana (Hindi: डेगाना) is a village in the Degana Tehsil deriving its name from this village itself, in the Nagaur district in Rajasthan, India. It is situated at a distance of 90 km from Nagaur in the southeast direction on Ajmer-Degana-Nagaur State highway-79 and 7 km from Railway Station of Degana Junction. Muwal and Dodwadia Jats founded the village about 600 years back. Its location is Latitude 26° 49' 60 N and Longitude 74° 19' 60 E.

A Railway Junction was made in pre-independence era on the Jaipur-Jodhpur railway track solely for the reason of having a Railway-Node for better operational control as there was a stretch of more than 30 km without any station in-between. And with the passage of time, a town came into being by drawing more & more habitation in last 50 years around the Railway Station owing to the better connectivity to more significant city centers like Jaipur, Jodhpur & Bikaner. The town now has Headquarters for administrative units of Tehsil i.e. Block & Sub Division.

It grew bigger & subsequently snatched the very identity from the base-village.

[edit] Degana Town

As described above, Degana is sleepy town populated around a railway junction 165 km west of Jaipur on Jaipur-Jodhpur Broad-gauge railway line of North-Westorn Railway. It has a good connectivity with Jaipur (165 km), Jodhpur(149 km), Delhi (473 km) and Bikaner (218 km) through the railway network.

A meter-gauge also segment initiates from Degana Junction and runs through Deedwana and joins the Bikaner-Delhi section at Ratangarh. Direct trains are available on a daily basis to Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Kota, Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Puri & Kolkata.

Degana is connected to major cities nearby through the Road network. The town falls on midway on the State Highway from Ajmer to Nagaur & Ajmer to Deedwana. Private bus services links it to Deedwana, Merta and Makrana which run on approx hourly basis.

The Degana consituency is representsted in Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha by MLA RichhPal Singh Mirdha of Congress Party and prsently forms part of Parliamentary Consituency Nagaur representated by MP Bhanwar Singh Dangawas of Bharatiya Janata Party. Delimitation Commission has however proposed shifting of Degana & Merta to form part of new parliamentary consituency Rajsamand.

Town has Administrative Sub Division Headquarter with SDM, Tehsil headquarter with 237+ revenue villages & Judicial Headquarter with ADJ court.

Nagaur district had the oldest history of Panchyati Raj Institution in independent India as they were inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru on October 24, 1952. And Degana was then part of a very large but single Gram Panchayat of 19 villages. During the first Panchayat elections, area of the present town forming part of Chandaroon Gram Panchayat elected a very young & compassionate man Kana Ram Jajunda its first Sarpanch.

Jajunda had a long political & social influence ever since till his demise on 28 August 2007. During last 12 years Kana Ram Jajunda did lot of organizing work to spread the message & vision of his political ideology since he joined Bharatiya Janata Party in 1996.

BJP had hardly any presence in the whole of Nagaur district. It required continouos & untiring organizational efforts from a man with direct appeal with the people. And Jajunda beacme instrumental in being the bridge between the party & the people.

In 1996 BJP recorded its first victory on Nagaur MP seat & grew from strength to strength. And the long & untiring efforts of this man in his eighties brought laurels to the party in form of 9 out of 10 MLA constituencies won by BJP in last Vidhan Sabha elections in 2003. The only exception was the Degana consituency where Kana Ram Jajunda did not contest elections due to health issues even after being offered the ticket by his party, BJP.

Degana Panchayat Samiti is chaired by Pradhan Smt. Raju Devi of Congress Party. There are 43+ Gram Panchayats each with a Sarpanch, Up-Sarpanch, several Ward-Panch and a Gram Sevak as official secretary.
