Talk:Defense Travel System
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
OK, I know there is a culture in Wikipedia of coming on strong with the "get this content off of our pristine site," and I do not yet know how to interact with this culture, so here goes:
- DTS is highly notable. All of the Service Members of the U.S. Military do their temporary duty travel through it. That's more people than know of Leeroy Jenkins. Further, there is a hefty need for more knowledge on the web application, as it is fairly arcane and often mis-used or under-used. Though this page is not yet complete, it is a useful start.
- In what sense is this article unreferenced? At the time of this writing, there are 6 URLs, which are about 10% of the text of the article. Is it merely because they are not put in the references section (where they are less-handy to click on, in this case)? Also, the mention of the official forms is another form of referencing. Please put citation needed around any fact that is not clear to the audience.
- I miss Ward's Wiki.

Well, I can't say personally one way or another, but something to ask yourself is whether or not these links actually demonstrate or explain or prove that the subject is notable. I'm not saying they don't, as I have no idea, but that's the "point of attack" someone would probably take if they wanted to assail this as non-notable. So it's something to consider. It takes more than just linking to things to establish notability. From the sound of it, though, you're gonna do fine. - Vianello (talk) 08:32, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
I am a little confused, I thought that notability and references were two separate issues, but you seem to refer to them as the same by "links ... demonstrate ... notable," above. Is notability the main reason the "This page has no references" tag was applied?
I have some feelings about these issues (having started with the very-different c2.com culture almost a decade ago), but I know that I would retread ground to get into too philosophical a debate about the burden of proof of notability. Still, I must mention that even the simplest google search yields 5-digits of results: http://www.google.com/search?q=%22defense+travel+system%22
