Defence mechanism, in psychoanalytic theory, is a psychological strategy used by individuals, groups and even nations to cope with reality and to maintain self-image.

These mechanism were also called, "Ego defense mechanisms" as Sigmund Freud postulate how the Ego uses these defense mechanisms to handle the conflict between the Id, the Ego and the Super ego, which is why these mechanisms are often called 'Ego defense mechanisms'.
