[edit] Los Presidentes

Yeah, I kind of give up. I proposed a compromise on the talk page, but I'm just going to let Jiang be the enforcer. Well, at least until I get pissed off again. :) jengod 22:09, Mar 20, 2004 (UTC)

Hello-

I appreciate your interest in cleaning up links & redirects re:Arizona, but I think you misunderstood the Arizona State Parks article. Stubby as it is, this article is (as the introduction states, and capitalization of name implies) about the agency known as Arizona State Parks which administers the parks listed there. So, if anything, the two articles should be broken up--not renamed "List of etc etc". Changing the name also causes some of the articles, like Cochise County, to not make sense (e.g. previously it read "Sites administered by Arizona State Parks," meaning the agency and linking to the agency w/included list, wheras now it reads "Sites administered by List of Arizona State Parks" which is nonsense--and I don't think we'd gain anything by piping the link). I just wanted to let you know what I'm thinking so that we don't end up going back and forth. I haven't changed anything yet, but I'll probably try to look at it again in a day or so.  :) Cheers, Iroll 07:37, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Thanks, I appreciate it! Iroll 17:30, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] City beautiful

Just to say, great work on the new article. Warofdreams 19:01, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I've been hoping someone would make a really sound start on this subject! Wetman 05:36, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC) Now to retrieve American Renaissance eh....

[edit] Thanks

Though your vote was a little late obviously, its the thought that counts, so thank you for helping me and for your continued service to wikipedia. RegardsGrazingshipIV 03:00, Mar 24, 2004 (UTC)

You = still a genius. :) jengod 21:01, Mar 24, 2004 (UTC) p.s. re On the other hand, that would severely gut the article Historic incorporated territories of the United States, since really only three (Palymyra, Alaska, Hawaii) might truly qualify. on bkonrad's talk--if you can figure out what to renamed, I saw we rename it. :) jengod 21:41, Mar 24, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] re: grazingship

Hcheney has come clean with some truths regarding GrazingshipIV. You may want to reconsider your Quickpoll vote. Kingturtle 00:02, 25 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] School (bsoft)

I go to Rocky Mountain High School. Sidenote: This year, the 4th high school ("Fossil Ridge High School") is opening. It's supposed to save the environment by being more energy efficent. At least every classroom has a window. Bsoft 08:20, 25 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Southern Tier

I live in Sayre, Pennsylvania and was born in Binghamton, New York, so the interest in making an article about the Twin Tiers region has been there, but you beat me to making a (quite nice!) article on the Southern Tier. If I could ask where you got the image you used for that so I could make a similar one for the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania, that would be extremely useful. Thanks :)Toolie 15:07, 25 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Well, I just realized I could take any 'highlighted county' map and edit it.. my mistake! Toolie 15:29, 25 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Sure!

Organized and possessions sounds great...now we just have to do it. :) ~j jengod 19:54, Mar 25, 2004 (UTC)

Actually, you've got me thinking, maybe it is best to use List of historic regions of the United States--we have former countries on there--no reason not to have former colonial possesions--they were part of the U.S. No reason not to explain things there. Whadja think? jengod 21:32, Mar 25, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Illinois Country

Thanks. I'm done with it for now. I'm sure I can keep finding things to tweak, but I'm tired of looking at it for now. Bkonrad | Talk 00:23, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Moment /Minute

Hey, it was the 70s. You can be forgiven for not remembering very clearly.  ;-) I've got two interesting (I hope) examples of references to Bicentennial Minutes in other programs that I will add shortly. Moncrief 01:12, Mar 27, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Kryptopterus bicirrhis

Actually, the text is nonsense. It describes the fish as being black, when it is transparent. Didn't realize that until I started trying to fix the article up. The species itself does exist though. -- Cyrius | Talk 02:56, Mar 29, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Watson

Do you mean the Senator Watson? That is pretty wild -- he's prety inconsequential as far as I could find out. Bkonrad | Talk 21:21, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Well, that's pretty amazing. I can't even remember how I happened to start working on him. I was doing John S. Horner and somehow got off on a tangent where I saw a link to James Watson was to the biologist. Anyhow, if you want to include the photo of the house in his article that'd be interesting. I couldn't find any portraits of him. Bkonrad | Talk 22:45, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] North River

Definitely I would redo the map to "the bend" only, and you might as well remove the reference to Harlem River. I have seen references to the "North or Hudson River" well into English times (indicating alternate usage) and in the modern era (i.e., since the Revolution) North is the river up to the bend.

Congratulations! Admin Decumanus! :) Cecropia 15:25, 5 Apr 2004 (UTC)~

[edit] Kenneth Allenson / Kända Aulan

Hello! I've been told (by Fedor) that you are running a case against this troll and it has been suggested that you might need my support in this case! I'm a sysop on the Swedish Wikipedia and, so far, I've been restricting myself to revert most of his edits there. Trolls aren't really common (yet) on the sv: so we are generally very forgiving. I've forwarded the issue to the other Swedish users on the Swedish Village pump. If you need my support however, feel free to contact me on my Swedish talk page (I hope you forgive me my shortcomings in the English languagge, if any) :) / Mats 19:16, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Admin Nomination

Hello, I would appreciate your help by earning your vote as an admin. I have been here about 5 months now and have been nominated. I have made many contributions and have improved on my editing and behavior. I take this seriously, that is why I have gotten into it with Anthony so much. You can look at my user page yourself and see my contribtions. I would appreciate a vote in the yes column if you agree. Again, thanks for your time and help. ChrisDJackson 02:34, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)

[edit] thanks

Decumanus,

Thanks for your vote in re my admin nomination.

I'm taking the opportunity of thanking those who troubled to vote to troll for crypto naive eyes. You've contributed so much I'm not sure if you are, but if so, can I ask some reactions for at least the general overview articles. I'm interested in adjusting whatever I can that is murky to the non-specialist reader and I can't really see that sort of thing much anymore. I'll be glad to return the favor for articles you'd like a glance at.

Anyway, thanks again.

[edit] Others' user pages

Although I do not agree with Paul Smith's recent attitudes, and would likely have deleted his comments on my user page myself, I prefer reserving that opportunity until I have had a chance to read them. Moving them to my talk page would have been acceptable as this would have resulted in a notice of the message. Please be guided accordingly in the future. Eclecticology 09:15, 2004 Apr 20 (UTC)

Thank you for your message. I mistakenly thought he had blanked your user page and replaced it with his text, as he has done so in the past with the article. I made the assumption that that you would see on your watchlist that your user page had been changed, and would investigate the reason. I will continue to do the same for other users besides you when I feel their page has been vandalized, as others have done so for me. As for your page, and the article itself, you can rest assured that I will lift no finger to correct anything he adds.-- Decumanus 12:24, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for responding. I've only started to appreciate what's happening with Paul Smith. My first reaction to your comments on the Talk:Priory of Sion page was that you had taken a heavy-handed approach. Since then I have come to see how Paul Smith works where he completely deletes anything that runs contrary to his views, and has even managed to convince Jimbo Wales that he is some kind of angel working for more accurate articles. I agree with Loremaster that there is much interesting and seemingly useful material on Smith's website, but his behaviour here has made me question whether his dealing with the issue of Pierre Plantard is as honest as he would have us believe. Eclecticology 16:15, 2004 Apr 20 (UTC)

[edit] New Netherland

Decumanus, I didn't note the stale date. I meant no implications-- just was saying what I've found to be true: Splitting up articles too much results in artificial problems. Not directed at you in any way. (I was drawn to the page by a newer remark.)Wetman 15:37, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Robo-sysop

Heh! I got the same email; haven't bothered to respond to it, since I doubt the veracity of the whole thing. I don't know who User:GrahamN is, but he sure is opinionated. I've received snivelling apologies from users I've blocked before, so I'm of the mind that blocks can reform. So I'm proud to be among the "new breed of trigger-happy robo-cop style sysops" and will continue to implement blocks.. for the good of Wikidom! ;) And by the way, you're doing a great job too. :) -- Hadal 21:38, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)

[edit] United Holyland

Hi, Just wondering what your concern was with United Holyland. I was wondering is it better spelled "United Holy Land".. It's odd that peace proposals seem deviod of the conecpt of political equality or religious consensus. -- Quickwik

I have'nt heard from you but someone is trying to hide the entry from the world. Like when Israeli soldiers prevent people from being medical supplies to Palestinians or demolish their food supply.

[edit] Brooklyn Museum of What? :)

You might be interested to know that the "Brooklyn Museum of Art" is back to being the classic Brooklyn Museum, again. -- Cecropia 02:47, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

It was changed to "Brooklyn Museum of Art" in 1997, and just changed back to "Brooklyn Museum." When I was cleaning up the links, I saw you had mentioned it at User:Decumanus/observations. Cheers! `` Cecropia 03:20, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I think you'll enjoy the museum, a lot. I hung out there often when I was a kid (and it was free, like most NYC museums) and I was really surprised when I started visiting again with my kids. Better and worse. Transient exhibits are much more nicely mounted now, and attendance is way up--however, it is pricy (though you can still get in for free, technically) and unrecognizable from my youth. It used to have the feel of the British Museum in London (a la The Mummy) but is now totally different inside. Cecropia 03:35, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

[edit] msg:test

Hey. Can I two favors of you regarding your use of "test deleted" warnings?

  • I've been told it's prefrable to use {{subst:test}} instead of {{msg:test}}. See this reference - it's about {{msg:vfd}} but the point still stands.
  • Could you please sign and date your test messages (~~~~)? It makes it easier for the next administrator to determing whether this guy is on a real vandalism spree, or whether this is the first test after, say, six months. :)

Thanks for your concern, Fennec 03:13, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC).

[edit] Spangles

Thanks for reverting me Spangles ;o) How do I keep track of developments with these two? This hasn't happened to me before. I've listed them on Vandalism in progress. --bodnotbod 17:28, May 4, 2004 (UTC)

cheers. What about this guy, though: 80.5.160.4 - have a look what I've put at Vandalism in progress - he's been naughty over some period now - and one of the changes at feminism is rather subtle, and may not be incorrect. Is there a procedure for going through ALL his changes? A lot have been reverted, but not all. --bodnotbod 17:56, May 4, 2004 (UTC) (User talk:Bodnotbod)
Oh, just to add - as that's the first time I've been caught up in something like that I was really impressed how quickly things kicked into action. I couldn't believe my pages had been reverted before I got there. Impressive stuff and most encouraging. --bodnotbod 17:58, May 4, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Mutating maps

I love those different maps on the same place which show changes thru time on Washington Territory! Very cool! --Menchi 22:51, 4 May 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Tompkinsville

Yeah, the "Tompkinsville, New York" refs come straight from DANFS, which often uses archaic names - sometimes I think they did it so the account uses contemporaneous names, other times I think the places were just names; the Navy historians didn't have the luxury of a Wikipedia connecting to a fuller account of a term that their narratives mention. [edit] User:Shroeder & his cat

[edit] Thanks for 5-boro map

Thanks for making the NYC article a tad less Manhattan-centric. I always thought Brooklyn joining the City was a mistake (no kidding). The former City of Brooklyn sold out its birthright 106 years ago for lower property taxes. -- Cecropia 23:00, 7 May 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks from Bod

Thanks for looking after my User page, I've been away from my desk. Much appreciated. --bodnotbod 20:22, May 12, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Disambiguating Rivers

I just had to spend quite a while disambiguating several river articles you created. A good place to check is the USGS database. It will at least alert you to U.S.-based multiple names before you start an article. For example Wind River had articles refering to three different Wind Rivers all aimed at your article on the one in Wyoming. Rmhermen 15:48, May 13, 2004 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't mean to imply that I don't particularly care for your contributions. In fact, we often seem to work on related topics. Rmhermen 16:00, May 13, 2004 (UTC)
I should mention that the USGS list has the annoying habit of listing inlet and outlet streams as separate rivers. One I just saw had a Salmon River flow in a Salmon River Reservoir and a separate Salmon River flow out of it -all in the same county! Rmhermen 16:42, May 13, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Differential Geometry of Curves

Hi. Me and Charles Matthews started a new differential geometry of curves page. I merged your curvature vector page into this new page. It would be nice if you could take a look at the page and tell me what you think. Furthermore it might be good to merge some more differential geometry pages into the new page. MathMartin 20:44, 14 May 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Highlighting of rivers

I went back to the Virgin River article, and this time the highlighting showed up, although not with great prominence. I understand your statement that it may depend on the browser and computer, but it also seems to depend in part on the angle at which I view the screen and how tired I am! My computer is a Toshiba laptop with Celeron processor, 15.0" diagonal XGA display, running MSIE 6.0. The underlying problem may be that the entire Colorado River system is in blue, with the highlighted river being distinguished only by use of a somewhat different shade of blue.

Another issue about the map you've used is that, for better or worse, most readers are more familiar with man-made landmarks than with natural features. That map is perfect for showing the California Central Valley, which stands out well even without the red outlining. For a river system, though, I suspect most readers would have a better idea of its location if it were presented in the context of state boundary lines and major cities. What would you think about using this Colorado River basin map or one like it? The scale is more appropriate; we don't really need a map that includes parts of Canada. Also, with the uniformly gray background, it would be easier to highlight a particular tributary. JamesMLane 23:03, 15 May 2004 (UTC)

Your latest version is a big improvement. The green highlighting shows up much better for me, and the superimposed state boundaries will be very useful to the reader. Great work! I have only one minor query -- is there any reason the border between the United States and Mexico is a dotted line for California and part of Arizona, and then switches to a solid line for the rest of Arizona as well as New Mexico and Texas? JamesMLane 22:50, 16 May 2004 (UTC)
