Source: detail of the VAX 11/780 picture at http://ftp.arl.mil/ftp/historic-computers/ The VT52 is part of a product line of computer terminals, each successively showing the evolution of the keyboard and screen layout. The designers were able to shrink the equipment at each stage, sometimes integrating storage and CPU with the terminal. At this stage in the evolution, such a terminal cost thousands of dollars.
