Decree 1775

Decree 1775 or the Indian Decree was signed into Brazilian law by President Fernando Henrique Cardoso January 8th, 1996. The decree set a timetable for demarcation of indigenous lands by FUNAI, the governmental department which deals with indigenous issues. The decree was widely criticized as a political maneuver to benefit commercial logging and mineral interests.
