December 2009 lunar eclipse

A partial lunar eclipse will take place on December 31, 2009, the last of four lunar eclipses in 2009. [1]

This eclipse is the one of four lunar eclipses in a short-lived series. The lunar year series repeats after 12 lunations or 354 days (Shifting back about 10 days in sequential years). Because of the date shift, the earth's shadow will be about 11 degrees west in sequential events.

  1. December 31, 2009 - partial (Saros series 115)
  2. December 21, 2010 - total (Saros series 125)
  3. December 10, 2011 - total (Saros series 135)
  4. November 28, 2012 - penumbral (Saros series 145)
These charts show the moon's path through the earth's shadow near its descending node. The path progresses southward through each sequential eclipse. Only the second and third are total.
