[edit] Possibly unfree images

Hi Debsalmi. Four images you uploaded appear to have conflicting licensing information - you claim to release them under the GFDL but also assert they are owned by Against Intuition, Inc. and protected by copyright and trademark. If you have permission from Against Intuition, Inc. to release these images under the GFDL you will need to provide evidence to Wikipedia through our OTRS channel - this is to ensure we don't have people asserting they have the right to release images under licensing when that is not the case. The images have been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images. You can comment on the discussion about their copyright status individually at:

If you don't understand this or need help understanding next steps please leave a message for me at the bottom of my talk page. Thanks -- SiobhanHansa 19:35, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Debsalmi - Thanks for leaving the message for me. Don't feel bad that you find it confusing - it is confusing. Unfortunately we just haven't found a way to make it any simpler because there are some significant legal implications and there are a lot of choices people can make.
From what you say it sounds like the company is prepared to release the images under a free license. Which you choose is up to the company. From our perspective WOT would ideally dual license the images under the GFDL and CC-by-sa-3.0 OR release them into the public domain. There are some different implications with each and it's up to WOT to decide which they are happiest with.
Once you have decided which license(s) WOT want to release them under you just need to have that documented in an appropriate way. There are two standard ways to do this - either WOT can put the images on their website with a clear statement that they are released under the whatever license - this works fine until someone decides to redesign the website in a years time and forgets that thse particular images are up there like that so licensing can be checked out! A more stable alternative is to have someone with the appropriate authority (which sounds like you) email Wikimedia Foundation's "permissions" (permissions AT wikimedia DOT org) system from a company email address listing the images and stating that they are released under the appropriate license/into the public domain. The text needs to clearly state which images are being released (include the full urls from the image pages in the email. Sample text for the release under dual licensing can be found here. If you go this route you should receive an email back from Wikimedia that has a "ticket number". This is the number used to track that permission has been received. That number then gets added to the image page so the images can be tied back to the official permission email you sent.
Once you've received the response from the permissions email we need to update the "Possibly unfree images" cases I started (see above) to let people know the permissions have been sent so the images aren't deleted in the meantime. Just adding a comment "permission sent to OTRS - ticket number #######" should be enough. If you have difficulty with that let me know. (OTRS is what the ticketing system used for permissions is known as).
Just a heads up regarding one of the images - it is highly unusual for a company to release its logo under a free license. There are some parts of branding you just don't normally want to give people permission to play with. There are other ways for Wikipedia to use logos (under fair use for example) so the fact there are a lot of logos in our articles does not mean they have been released in this way. WOT might want to take a closer look at whether or not they want to release that particular image.
Hope this makes sense. Let me know if you need more assistance at all. -- SiobhanHansa 12:23, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image source problem with Image:Wot logo slogan medium.png

The Fair Use info looks really good on Image:Wot logo slogan medium.png. Thanks for your effort; I know it takes a bit of time to fill in all the "paperwork". (EhJJ)TALK 11:34, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:WOT Web of Trust - Search Screen.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:WOT Web of Trust - Search Screen.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. NotifyBot (talk) 14:55, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
