Debbie Googe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Debbie Googe (born 1962 in England)[1][2] is the bassist for Irish/British band My Bloody Valentine. Prior to her joining My Bloody Valentine, she lived in Somerset and played for a band called Bikini Mutants, who gigged with The Mob.

Googe eventually moved from Bristol to London, and early in 1985 an ex-girlfriend of hers recommended her as a bassist to Kevin Shields and Colm O'Ciosoig of My Bloody Valentine. She joined the band after an audition in April of 1985, eventually leaving in 1995, noting she "hadn't been happy for a long time".

While an awesome live bass player in concert as many bootlegs attest to, Kevin Shields played bass on studio recordings at least as far back as their recording for Lazy records and their subsequent recordings for Creation records. Shields noted that she chose to play in a style not really compatible to studio recording, but he did imply that certainly she had the ability, if she chose, to play in a style more appropriate for the recording environment. But she has yet to tone down her raucous style of attacking the bass making for some amazing live performances.

She became a cab driver for a short period, until forming Snowpony in 1996 with her partner at the time, Katharine Gifford, formerly of Stereolab.[3] Googe is reportedly participating in My Bloody Valentine's 2007 reunion & the upcoming 2008 tour. The band recently activated mybloodyvalentine.co.uk and Shields’ manager confirmed that the site is being built by Googe herself.
