[edit] Welcome to Wikipedia!

Hey there, Deathgleaner, and welcome to our great encyclopedia, which currently has more than 2,413,096 articles! Even with this large number, all of your contributions are important (including the small ones), and I hope you like the place and decide to stay! Here's a few starting tips for you:

After reading all this (or even just glimpsing at it), I can understand that you might feel apprehensive about editing and contributing articles, for fear of making a mistake. But don't worry too much about mistakes; after all, you're new. Instead, everyone here encourages you to be bold! If you need help with anything, feel free to leave me a message, or you can put {{helpme}} on your talk page, and someone will show up shortly to give you a hand.

One last thing: when leaving a message on someone's talk page, don't forget to put four "tildes" (~~~~) to automatically sign your name. leave me alown

Happy Editing! -- P.B. Pilhet 02:29, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Reply: Oh, so you're not new after all...oh well :-) You're welcome for the greeting. As for being a sysop, I wish I was one, but sadly no... maybe in a few months though. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. See you around! -- P.B. Pilhet 02:36, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Link Question

Wow, I'm not sure how to get to that link's target page. I'm not even sure it is a link. You might want to try posting your question at the village pump's technical area. You might get an answer there. -- P.B. Pilhet 02:42, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding your edits to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical):

Your recent edit to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) (diff) was reverted by an automated bot. The edit was identified as adding either test edits (like "TEST" or example.jpg), vandalism, or link spam to the page or having an inappropriate edit summary. If you want to experiment, please use the preview button while editing or consider using the sandbox. If this revert was in error, please contact the bot operator. If you made an edit that removed a large amount of content, try doing smaller edits instead. Thanks! // VoABot II 02:45, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sysop

Actually, most of the people that welcome new users are probably not sysops; I'm not a sysop here, yet (as I said), but I'm a sysop on several other wiki's (here's one).

Yeah, there's all kinds of things you can do on your userpage; I've done a lot of work on mine, and have just the way I want it (most Wikipedian's don't put as much effort into their's as I've done to mine). Oh, and trust me, I've met a lot of very social people on here... though not quite in a good way :-) -- P.B. Pilhet 02:51, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

That's what I did for all the other wiki's I work on; I just used the same userpage for each of them (I mean, why bother designing different userpages for every site that you work on?). I would stay and chat longer, but it's 11:00 PM where I live, so I have to get to bed! :-) I guess I'll catch you later! Until then, happy editing! -- P.B. Pilhet 03:07, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] About the link

It's not a link, but a parser function. It means if the value of the parameter "small" is "yes", then output "small" from the template, or do whatever with it that it's supposed to do. Otherwise, "standard" takes the place of "small". –Pomte 02:58, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, what Pomte said. Basically, if it's in [[double brackets]], it's a link, and if it's in {{double curly-brackets}}, it's either a template or a parser function. Oh yeah, but templates also have links. If you want to edit a template, type Template:templatename into the search box, replacing "templatename" with the name of the template. If you want to provide a link to a template, use {{tl|templatename}}, again replacing "templatename" with the name of the template. Pyrospirit Flames Fire 03:28, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
It also could be a magic word; those can confuse people ("there's no Template:PAGENAME!") GracenotesT § 13:32, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
To make the parser functions work on another wiki, install the ParserFunctions extension. Mike Dillon 03:34, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Signatures

Hey, Deathgleaner! I like your new sig, it's sweet man. But there is one problem: Wikipedia doesn't allow images in their signatures, unfortunately. You can see the guideline for signatures here (yes, there's a whole guideline just for sigs; we're very thorough here :-]). To quote directly from that page, "Images of any kind shall not be used in signatures." It's a pain, because I'd also like to use an image in my sig. But they do give good reasons why they're not allowed... oh well. -- P.B. Pilhet 15:36, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome v2.0

Hi. I saw you creted template:welcome v2.0 and have been posting it on every new user talk page you come across. However, there seems to be a flaw in the way it is written. Subsequent messages posted on talk pages, such as those from TW are then grouped with the welcome in the dark blue area, making them difficult to read. Could you look into this? Thanks. GoodnightmushTalk 04:22, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Haven't got a clue. I'm horrible with that stuff. My signature is the best I've ever managed, at it took me a while. Sorry. GoodnightmushTalk 04:25, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Welcome v2.0

Do we really need another Welcome template? Anyway, I'd just to inform you that you'll need to change the colour scheme. It's recommended that you only use the colours listed at Wikipedia:Colours as they have been chosen for easier accessibility by those with colour blindness and impaired vision. --  Netsnipe  ►  04:24, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] You have been renamed

I hereby rename you "WelcomeBot", as a result of the phenomenal rate at which you welcome editors ;) great job! I won't keep you any longer — anthony[review] 18:16, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Welcomes

Please go back and subst: all your welcome messages. Thank you. Picaroon 18:19, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for substing, but I'd recommend going and substing all of these as opposed to continuing on your welcoming spree. Also, don't forget to sign your name with four tildes. Picaroon 18:23, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Using three will only provide your username, as opposed to your username and the date. So I'd say four is best. Picaroon 18:26, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
See here. Picaroon 18:30, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
The drawbacks, while lengthy, are minor compared to the benefits. So yes, it really is required for welcome templates. Picaroon 18:33, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Hello, I wonder if you would mind not welcoming sock puppets and trolls, and thanking users who haven't made any contribution, for their contributions. Thanks. -- zzuuzz(talk) 19:15, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
More specifically, a user whose only contribution is to say that a living person's daughters sleep with heroin addicts should not get a conventional welcome--it would be better for the project if such a person got nothing more than a discouraging message, I think. Darkspots 00:57, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
Substing is not supposed to be used with {{{n|default value}}}!!!!!!!!!!!! Onekopaka

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. One or more of your recent edits, such as the one you made to Columbia River Plateau, have been considered unhelpful or unconstructive and have been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Katr67 21:08, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Please do not add unhelpful and unconstructive content to Wikipedia, as you did to Talk:Columbia River Plateau. Your edits appear to be vandalism and have been reverted. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. Katr67 21:08, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Please stop. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia, as you did to Glacial Lake Missoula, you will be blocked from editing. Katr67 21:10, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

This is your last warning. The next time you vandalize Wikipedia, as you did to Grand Coulee, you will be blocked from editing. Katr67 21:10, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

This is your last warning. The next time you vandalize Wikipedia, as you did to Spokane, you will be blocked from editing. Your addition of a non-existent place to this disambiguation page appears to be pointless vandalism. -Pete 01:45, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Why are you threatening to block me just because I do practical jokes? You should tell me that 'NO JOKES ARE ACCEPTED ON WIKIPEDIA BECAUSE WE SUCK AT THEM' on my user talk.

♫Deathgleaner 01:12, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

U an admin?

Wow - if you consider meaningless typoing of Wikilinks and removal of references sections "practical jokes," then not only are you vandalizing, you need to work on your sense of humor, too. Adminship has nothing to do with enforcing policy - not at this level, anyway. You're vandalizing. Stop it. -Pete 01:32, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Deathgleaner. Katr does not need to tell you, you should read the OFFICIAL POLICY titled Wikipedia:Vandalism, where very near the top so it is hard not to miss: The most common types of vandalism include the addition of obscenities to pages, page blanking, or the insertion of bad (or good) jokes or other nonsense. So please read, and comprehend. Then stop vandalising and you will not have any problems. You may also want to read WP:WWIN as well so you can figure out what not to do in general. [edit] Speedy deletion of Interstate 2

A tag has been placed on Interstate 2, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

non-existent highway

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet very basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Katr67 18:52, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Deathgleaner, after doing some research it is clear that Interstate 2 does not exist. I would like to assume good faith and assume you meant U.S. Route 2, or some other #2 road, but your insistence that "I-2" exists indicates that you are just making stuff up. Please don't do this in the future. Consider this your final warning. The next time you make something up and pass it off as fact, you will be blocked. Thanks, Fang Aili talk 19:59, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Block recommended at Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism

Deathgleaner, I think your intentions are good, but if you want to be part of the Wikipedia community, you simply must pay some attention to policies and guidelines. I reported your recent edits, recommending that your account be temporarily blocked. -Pete 19:25, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] re: oops.

I did mean U.S. Route 2 but I think my brain was messed up.

Deathgleaner 18:20, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

In that case, U.S. Route 2 already exists.
I have a request -- would you mind removing the <big> tags from your signature? (This is in line with Wikipedia:Signatures.) It would make your sig fit better with surrounding text. Thank you very much, Fang Aili talk 18:28, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] May 2007

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. One or more of your recent edits, such as the one you made to Wikipedia:Welcoming committee/members, have been considered unhelpful or unconstructive and have been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Katr67 19:19, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Coastal Indians

Hi DG, I just suggested deletion of a redirect page you created: Coastal Indians. Please see the discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2007 May 11 and weigh in if you disagree. -Pete 19:57, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Vandalise here

I consider creation of this page a bad idea. It's not linked from anywhere, and even if it were, it wouldn't reduce vandalism a single bit - the vandals want to damage the articles, not some bogus page in the Wikipedia space. For editing experiments, there already exists a sandbox, a link to which appears below the edit box. In addition, we don't want to give vandals any kind of legitimacy by creating a page for them. Regards, Mike Rosoft 19:09, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Inappropriate language

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although we invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia, at least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to Template talk:Welcome2, was not constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Inappropriate language will NOT be tolerated. — Chris53516 (Talk) 20:33, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Archiving talk page

Notice Werdnabot is not currently functioning as of 15:48, 6 March 2007 (UTC). However, Shadowbot3 is a clone of the Bot and has taken over the archiving of pages that have the Werdnabot archival template on them.
Alternatively, you may wish to switch to MiszaBot I (for article talk pages), MiszaBot II (for project talk pages and noticeboards) or MiszaBot III (for user talk pages). To have any of those Bots handle archiving, make a request at User:MiszaBot/Archive requests.

Hope that helps! I'd suggest MiszaBot III, personally. ArielGold 23:45, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Wikipedians looking for help

While your edit of the above category page seemed in good faith, I'm wondering exactly what you were going for. You removed the piped links to multiple, carefully selected pages, blanked the inner category and the interlanguage links, suggested people place the template on their userpage rather than their talk page, removed the purge function, and suggested people ask questions at the village pump proper, when the various help pages are the village pump assistance, and the help desk. Consider suggesting changes on the talk page rather than making a major edit like this to a highly monitored page.--Fuhghettaboutit 00:59, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:GetFirefox Orange.png

Thanks for uploading Image:GetFirefox Orange.png. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 22:05, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:GetFirefox Orange.png

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:GetFirefox Orange.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Kesac 22:59, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fusobacterium novum

A tag has been placed on Fusobacterium novum, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Images in an image gallery cannot be resized, and should always have captions (otherwise, what would be the point for having a gallery?). However, if you don't want captions, just don't add one.
