[edit] Merge of content at Deafness to Hearing impairment and Deaf culture
The Deafness article was very oddly structured. Originally, it existed at Deaf, and discussed big-D Deaf versus little-d deaf, and other aspects of Deaf culture. The subsequent page move to Deafness seemed to invite discussion of medical causes of deafness.
Thus, as it stood, the article had two halves. The first half listed medical causes of deafness, in a very dry, clinical manner. The second half discussed aspects of living as a deaf person, and of Deaf culture. I found this juxtaposition of two topics to be a very odd way to style an article.
So, WP:BOLD, I moved the first half of the article, which discusses medical causes of hearing impairment, to Talk:Hearing impairment/Deafness. Likewise, I moved the second half of the article, which discusses Deaf culture, to Talk:Deaf culture/Deafness. If you compare each section with the appropriate article, you will find there is a lot of duplication between the content previously found at Deafness, and the article to which it relates.
For this reason, I feel that a disambiguation page is best for the Deaf article, allowing people to read about hearing impairment and Deaf culture at the appropriate pages. I feel that it is unnecessary to have a third article that stacks one topic atop the other, without integration. I feel that the first and second halves of the Deafness article were simply pale versions of the hearing impairment and Deaf culture articles, respectively. We can improve these two articles with the content from Deafness.
Perhaps this illustrates the clash between the medical community and the Deaf community. Models of deafness explores the topic a bit further. Regardless, I appreciate your feedback. Photouploaded (talk) 15:07, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Namespaces
Just a note about the namespaces: Deafness, the word, currently redirects to Hearing impairment. Archives of Talk:Deafness are not at the Hearing impairment namespace, they are at the Deaf namespace, and can be found at Talk:Deaf/Talk:Deafness.
The reason for this is that the Deafness article was previously named Deaf, so the archived discussion of the Deafness talk page is more relevant to Deaf than to Hearing impairment. Your feedback is welcome. Photouploaded (talk) 16:28, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
- Proposing a merge.
Please look at tag templates such as Template:mergeinto and Template:mergefrom, and tag the article pages for what you want to merge, so that readers will see a consistent link to a discussion. Otherwise, this proposal is dead. Dicklyon (talk) 16:31, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
- It's not dead, it's finished. I am asking for help completing it. Photouploaded (talk) 14:32, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
