Death by Metal is the first demo released by Death in 1983. The demo was originally released under Mantas in 1983 but was reissued on September 7, 1984 as Death. It is arguably the first work of the death metal genre.[1]

The bassist on the original Mantas demo release is unknown and after the release they remained bass-less until they changed their name to Death in late 1984.
