Death by Chocolate is a marketing term for various desserts that feature chocolate (especially dark chocolate or cocoa) as the primary ingredient. The trademark is owned by the parent company of Bennigan's restaurants, but unlicensed uses of the term are common.
A dish called "Death by Chocolate" might be:
- A layered chocolate cake, with fudge, ganache, or chocolate mousse between the layers
- A molten chocolate cake
- A flourless chocolate cake (sometimes called "chocolate decadence")
"Death by Chocolate" is also the name of an ice cream flavour. In the ice cream, there is usually chocolate fudge, chocolate chunks and chocolate ice cream.
Marcel Desaulniers, longtime chef at the Trellis Restaurant in Williamsburg, Virginia has written a popular series of books on the "death by dessert" theme: Death by Chocolate, Death by Chocolate Cakes, Death By Chocolate Cookies, and Desserts to Die For.
There is also a New Zealand franchise operation called Death by Chocolate, album and song "Death by Chocolate" by De-Phazz, and a British pop singer records under the name.
It was spoofed by SNL.
