[edit] Dr. Danco
A new killer arrives in Miami. This killer leaves his victims alive, but has a specific method of torture, leaving the victims without their extremities, genitalia and facial features. Through the course of the novel, it is revealed that the killer is linked to Sergeant Doakes' past. While working Special Operations for the United States Government during the Salvadoran Civil War, Doakes had a man on his team, nicknamed "Dr. Danco." Danco came upon his name, which was from a vegetable slicing machine (from the advertising tag-line: "it slices, it dices, it makes chopped vegetables"), for his specific method of torture. Danco would cut off the victim's ears, nose, eyelids, lips, tongue, arms (first at the wrist, then elbow, then finally to the shoulder blade), genitals, and legs (first at the ankles, then knee, then pelvis). All the while, the victim would be in front of a mirror so that the torture victim would be forced to watch. Dr Danco would spread this sequence of mutilation out over weeks.
Years later, Danco is now attacking former black op's soldiers, seeking revenge on former "allies" who he feels have betrayed him. Doakes has Captain Matthews call a Washington bureau, who sends a man down to assist in the investigation, which also includes Dexter and Deborah. The novel departs from the previous novel, in that it doesn't focus on Dexter's own murders, but rather on his investigation to find the killer.
[edit] Dexter
Dexter continues to be stalked by Sergeant Doakes, causing him to retreat further than ever into his protective facade of normality. Dexter "accidentally" proposes to Rita, who is excited to marry Dexter. Dexter, while reluctant, strongly considers marrying her because of an incident with her son, Cody. During a fishing trip, Dexter observed Cody carve into a fish with apparent glee. Subsequently, when a neighbor came to Rita's house to ask if anyone had seen her dog, Dexter notices that Cody leaves the room. Thus, Dexter concludes that Cody witnessing the violence in his house as a child, when his biological father Paul beat and raped his mother, may have experienced the same effect as Dexter's witnessing his mother's murder. Thus, the novel leaves the impression that Dexter will train Cody on "The Code Of Harry", in order to allow him to operate in society, but still be able to satisfy his impulses.
[edit] Deborah
Deborah seems set for heartache when she falls for Kyle Chutsky, an agent from Washington and former colleague of Sgt. Doakes, sent down to Miami to help find Danco. He's eventually kidnapped by the sadistic psychopath, who sends Deb his finger (identifiable because of the ring Chutsky was wearing) in a cellophane bag. Dexter eventually saves his life, although Kyle's brush with Danco quite literally costs him an arm and a leg. Initially, he insists on leaving Deborah so he doesn't burden her, but she remains defiant and sticks by her new love.
[edit] Slide Count
There are 41 slides in Dexter's Rosewood Box at the end of the novel.
