Dean Lawford is probably one of the last of the great half backs of rugby league.
Formerly of Sheffield Eagles, Leeds Rhinos, Bramley, Huddersfield ,Halifax, Widnes, Dewsbury, Halifax (again), Batley and Dewsbury (again)!
Standing at a little over five foot, the portly ginger wizard bamboozles defence with shrewd distribution across the field and with an inch perfect kicking game always willing to be brought to the fore; this guy plays a lot better than he looks.
He began his fledgling career at the chalice of rugby league talent that is Dewsbury Moor RLFC.
Dean, currently captain of the Rams, also enjoys the more refined aspects of life when he is not battling on the rugby field. He openly enjoys Emmerdale and beer. His success hasn't dampened his every day man approach. He's been drinking beer with his mates Frainy, Bones and Sheardy since he was knee high to a grasshopper, mainly down at Batley Irish Nash and then t'Xclusiv.
He is also critically acclaimed. Ray French (BBC Rugby League commentator) has nicknamed him 'Little Napoleon' and his former coach Neil Kelly questioned why the Great Britain coaching staff hadn't knocked on his door. And that still remains one of the most unsolved mysteries of modern rugby league.
The much travelled Yorkshireman may have never quite reached the expectation that some set him, but he is last of a classic genre. The modern examples use fast acceleration and unstoppable foot-work; Dean didn't subscribe to this method. That's why he last of the great half backs.
