[edit] Overview
Deadly Creatures allows players to play as a scorpion and a tarantula and engage in brutal combat against other insects and arachnids. The game uses motion-controlled combat, and has a dark story. Content of the game revealed so far resembles a 3D brawler, but lead designer Jordan Itkowitz has stated that there will be more to the game than this.
The game's concept was inspired when Itkowitz had a dream about using the Wii Remote to control a snake, slithering through the grass and striking a mouse. In brainstorming, the idea of the snake and other creatures were left on the cutting room floor, leaving the scorpion and tarantula.
Features of the game according to THQ:
- Two interlocking adventures: Unique game structure lets you play as both the Tarantula and the Scorpion. Use each one’s attacks and abilities to explore every corner of this complex, continuous world.
- A world of danger and discovery: Infiltrate the gloomy, thorn-filled labyrinth of the Brambles, home to gangs of wolf spiders and vicious black widows. Battle scavenging rats in the trash-filled Wasteland, where an old abandoned truck towers above you like a fortress. Scale cliff walls, cacti and rusting subterranean pipes, all to reach your final, most dangerous destination: a creepy old gas station on a lonely desert road.
- Fantastic abilities: As you progress, you’ll unlock special behaviors – all using unique Wii controls - to reach even more parts of the world. Swing through the air as the tarantula, use your pincers to burrow and slash through obstacles as the scorpion, and more.
[edit] Gameplay
Previews have revealed that the two creatures have different playing styles, with the scorpion's levels featuring more action-orientated gameplay, while the tarantula is more stealth orientated, with less linear levels.[2] The Wii Remote and Nunchuck is used for both movement and attacks, with motion controls incorporated for special attacks and finishing moves, while the tarantula also utilizes the pointer function to shoot webs.[3] New abilities are also gained as the player progresses through the game.
Along with dispatching common insects such as pill bugs, crickets, wolf spiders, dung beetles and hornets (most which can be devoured to regain health), the player also faces bosses including a Gila Monster, a rattlesnake and eventually humans.[3] The clashes between the insects are described as similar to monster movies, with a similar impact to battles in King Kong and Jurassic Park.
