Six friends on a road trip stop for the night at a bed and breakfast in the sleepy town of Lovelock. After a night that leaves both the inn's owner and chef dead, the gang finds themselves under suspicion by the local Sheriff. But that's only the beginning as nearly all of the town's quirky residents become possessed by an evil spirit and pin down the friends inside the B&B. A mysterious "Drifter" (played by Brent David Fraser) is the only person who knows how to fight the evil spirit.

Being a horror spoof, Dead and Breakfast has many references to other zombie/horror movies that appear throughout the film. Some include:
- When the gardener is killed by Johnny with the gardening shears, his silhouette is nearly identical to that of Cropsy, the killer from 1981's slasher film The Burning, from that film's infamous "raft scene".
- In the closet where the cast finds a chainsaw a poster of Evil Dead can be seen.
- When the cast finds the dead servant stabbed to death, one of them tries to run in panic but finds he can't, slipping on the excess amounts of gore on the floor. This scene is reminiscent of a similar scene in Peter Jackson's Braindead (a.k.a. Dead Alive)).
- During Zach Selwyn's singing, the zombies can all be seen doing the Thriller dance.
- One of the characters compares the bed and breakfast to the house of Psycho (1960), and it then cuts to a shot of Oz Perkins, the son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins.
A large amount of Dead and Breakfast was filmed in Livermore, CA, including the title inn.
When the group first gets to the bed and breakfast, they hear the song "The Freshmen" on the radio and sing to it. "The Freshmen" was written and performed by Brian Vander Ark, who appears as a zombie and wrote the original score to the film.
34 gallons of "blood" were used over the course of the shoot. 4.5 gallons of "blood" were used just to cut off Erik Palladino's head.
Erik Palladino's driver's license is still blood stained from his battle with a chainsaw.
