De libero arbitrio diatribe sive collatio

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

De libero arbitrio diatribe sive collatio is the Latin title of a work written by Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam in 1524. It is commonly called The Freedom of the Will in English.

The Freedom of the Will is a polemical work written to refute Martin Luther and his teachings, specifically on the question of free will. Erasmus generally avoided involving himself in theological disputes; however, he was urged by many of his contemporaries and the Pope to apply his skill and learning to answer Luther.

Luther's response in On the Bondage of the Will is often considered Luther's best piece of theological writing.
