[edit] Events
The arena has featured annual appearances of several family shows: Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Sesame Street Live, Disney On Ice, Harlem Globetrotters, The Wiggles, and Barney among others. In addition, the facility is home to two professional sports franchises. The Worcester Sharks, the American Hockey League franchise owned, operated and affiliated with the San Jose Sharks, and hosts 40 regular season home games plus potential playoff action. The Continental Indoor Football League’s New England Surge is locally owned and operated and boasts a 6 game home schedule plus potential playoff action.
The DCU Center also plays host to a variety of additional sporting and entertainment events including Holy Cross Crusaders basketball, Professional Bull Riding, MIAA High School Basketball Championships, Stars On Ice, Monster Trucks and more.
The DCU Center has hosted the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships twice. The DCU Center has hosted NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey regional tournaments more times than any other arena in the country and has been selected as the host facility for 2008 and 2010.
During the 1980s, the arena became a popular stop for touring musical acts. The old Boston Garden had poor acoustics and lacked air conditioning, prompting many promoters to schedule Boston area shows at the DCU Center.
The DCU Center has also held many World Wrestling Entertainment shows in the past. Most notably Backlash in 2003 (then known as the Worcester Centrum) which featured Goldberg defeating The Rock in the main event. Most recently SmackDown! and ECW in September.
[edit] Celtics incident
During a 2007 Boston Celtics pre-season game condensation from the ice rink below the basketball court seeped through the floor and the game was canceled. Dozens of police officers were ordered to the arena after numerous fans stormed onto the court and voiced their anger with the situation.
To appease unhappy fans, an autograph session was held, but players seemed uncomfortable and the session ended quickly.[2]
