The DB Baureihe (class) 66 was a class of two Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) locomotives designed for express goods train service and passenger train service on the mainline and branchlines of the state railways of the former West Germany.
Only the two prototypes were built. The DB turned to diesel locomotives instead.
The top speed of 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) and an axleload of only 15 tonnes (15 LT/17 ST) were good qualifications for that. The class 66 was designed to replace locomotives from classes 38.10, 78 and 93.
